While working in an attic, an exterminator accidentally knocked something small out of place—a big brown bat! The little animal curled up on the floor, and although he was barely moving he appeared to be breathing. He must have been sleeping in the attic to escape the cold before being woken up. A new friend to join the overwinter crew - another big brown bat who was found on the side of a house, probably woken by warm temperatures last week and caught outside when it got cold again. I've nicknamed this one Bree. Unlike Zee, the other big brown bat overwinter, this new girl was pretty skinny and dehydrated - Zee weighed a solid 22 grams, while Bree was only 16 grams, on the low side for an adult big brown. She'll have several days of fattening up before she joins Zee in hibernation. Bre

Reflecting back on the Big Brown Bat pups we raised this year... This Big Brown Bat is currently going through flight training, gaining strength before release. Bats are very important to the ecosystem, helping to control insect populations by eating a variety of insects, including beetles, flies, and even wasps! Many of the bugs they eat, such as the corn root worm, are major agricultural pests that can cause millions of crop damage a year. Bats like this one help prevent some of this damage.
