Cape May Moment - Monday September 14th, 2020 Did you know that Cape May is an important staging area for Tree Swallows during their fall migration? These small aerial insectivores create an unforgettable spectacle as they form massive flocks with THOUSANDS of individuals swirling around. While they feed mostly on small bugs, Tree Swallows are one of the few species that can also eat bayberries, and you'll often see them swarm down into the bayberry thickets along the dunes. Flamingos are generally chatty birds with a range of sounds including honks and grunts. These vocalizations help keep flocks together! The sounds are also paired with visual displays for rituals like mating. A gathering of flamingos is referred to as a "flamboyance." Between the striking pink coloration and the constant chatter, we'd say that's appropriate! 🦩🦩🦩 Our flamingos will be housed exclusively inside the World of Birds during the highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreak. We hope you

Turtles like enrichment, too! 🐢 This yellow-margined box turtle lives in the World of Birds and apparently has never seen such amazing boots! Not only is he really interested in figuring out what they are doing in his aviary, he is also getting some exercise! 👢👢 (📹: Zookeeper Janeen) | Cape May County Park/Zoo

The 2024 count season has flown by which means we are back with our last Wednesday’s from the Watch for this year! Today marks 5 days until our Avalon Seawatch ends and we are hearing from our counter, Daniel Irons, one last time. Of course, we want to thank Daniel for the endless hours he has spent out on the beach in Avalon this year. No matter the weather, he could always be trusted to hold down the count. His identification skills, resilience, and good humor were appreciated by the staff, vo

We put water in the bird bath and this is what happened instantly! Among all the snow/freeze, the birds need water. They expend so much energy and burn calories trying to use snow/ice to hydrate that they can become dehydrated. Keep an eye out that the baths don't freeze. | Cape May County Animal Welfare Society

Hey everyone it's Kevin from Cape May Astro and I share my three telescopes with my street corner astronomy pop-up experiences in my hometown of Cape May, New Jersey. So yesterday November 18th I was up early headed to the cove for a Rocket Lab Launch from Wallops Island, VA. Remember I said I didn't have my hopes up for capturing this because it's really difficult to see an 18 M electron rocket from 77 mi downrange and the bright Sun. Much easier at night time. But anyway on my way back to @spi

Whether you just got into birding or have been birding your entire life, we all struggle with identifying Cooper’s Hawks vs Sharp-shinned Hawks. And that’s okay! Tune into this week’s Wednesday on the Watch to hear from our naturalists and counters on their go-to field marks for identifying these two Accipitridae species. Disclaimer: Every one experiences and sees birds differently and every occasion is different. Most times, birders use a collection of all these field marks in order to figure o
